📊 Metrics: Article Reads | Social Actions | Read Depth | Page Depth | Attention Time

All the important Smartocto Insights metrics in one place.

Article Reads 📄✅

Article Reads is a metric that counts the number of times a real person opened an article, spent at least 10 seconds on it, and actually started consuming the content.

Unlike Pageviews, which is a metric that can only measure a browser event of clicking on an article and loading the page, Article Reads is a metric that takes into consideration tab-in focus (differentiating true attention time from idle/away-from-screen time) and human interactions with the page (e.g. mouse movement, clicking, scrolling, etc.)
Naturally, the number of Article Reads will always be lower than Pageviews, as it provides a realistic picture on how many visitors have actually spent some time (a minimum of 10 seconds) reading the article.

Social Actions 🌐👥💬

Social Actions represent the combined number of key social actions (likes, shares, comments...) across major social network platforms. Data is collected from the available public APIs of the networks and the conjoined number is displayed on the Overview page.
Additionally, social actions play an integral role in calculating the Exposure CPI of ASTA (Authors/Sections/Topics/Articles). Together with metrics such as Pageviews, they help measure levels of audience reach.

Read Depth 📄🔍

Read Depth is a metric that reveals how deeply a visitor has got into reading a piece of content. It takes into consideration true attention time, text length and word count, scroll-depth, and the average time it takes a reader to consume the content. In other words, it analyses the article main content on the page, disregarding all other elements.

Practical Example
  • Word count: 450 words
  • Average reading speed: 300 words per minute
  • Time needed to read the entire article: 90 seconds ([450/300] *60 seconds)
  • Measured Attention time: 120 seconds.
  • Maximum measured scroll position: 25%
  • The shown read depth in smartocto: 25%

Example explanation

For a text of 450 words - with an average person being able to read 300 words per minute - the visitor will need 90 seconds of accumulated attention time in order to read 100% of the article. Given the metrics from the example - and looking from the attention time point of view - it was determined that the visitor spent more time than needed (120 seconds instead of the needed 90 seconds). So, based on attention time only, the conclusion could be that the visitor read the whole text.

However, since the maximum scroll position that was measured with the tracker was just 25%, that percentage was selected as read depth percentage. This percentage is shown because - although attention time spent was enough to read the whole text - the visitor never actually scrolled below that % of the article, meaning that the visitor did not see the rest of the article. Therefore, having in mind that the sufficient attention time to read the article sometimes does not equal to actually reading the article, Read Depth is a metric that will measure how much of the content was consumed in reality.

Page Depth 📚

Page Depth calculates the average number of pages that have been visited during a reading session, with one session lasting 30 minutes. In other words, how many different pages (home page, article pages, section pages...) have been opened once the reader comes to your website.

Attention Time ⏱️

Attention Time calculates the time a visitor actually spends on the page reading the content. In journalism industry, another common term for attention time is 'engaged time'. The attention time calculated by the smartocto system excludes 'idle time' - i.e. those seven minutes you left to make a cup of coffee and left the browser window open. However, as soon as you return, sit in front of the screen and make any kind of interaction with the page such as mouse movement, clicking, highlighting, scrolling, etc. the system will continue the count and ultimately display the amount of time a reader was actively engaged with the content.

In smartocto Insights, Average Attention Time is expressed in minutes and seconds, and Total Attention Time expressed in hours.

An additional thing to keep in mind is that both article and landing pages are aggregated if no page type (article, landing) filter is applied.
