Smartocto metadata tagger

If you are curious about what the smartocto metadata tagger is and how it works, you are at the right place!

What is smartocto metadata tagger?

Smartocto metadata tagger is smartocto service which analyses the text of your articles and identifies:

  • Topics
  • Entities

Are all languages supported?

As smartocto metadata tagger is an AI-based service, it is important to note that support of different languages depends on the capabilities of our used AI provider. Before implementation, smartocto needs to verify if the desired language is supported for this feature.

How does smartocto metadata tagger identify Topics and Entities?

As far as topics are concerned, your organisation needs to provide a  list of available topics. The system reads your supplied text and connects the discovered topics to the ones in the predefined list. We want to get you started in a easy way, so smartocto offers a predefined lists, and they are customisable, meaning that during the implementation process, you can edit the list and add additional topics that are specific to your brand, or translate the topics to your language of choice.

On the other hand, the entities are gathered from the provided text itself. The system automatically generates a list of entities identified within the text. The smartocto metadata tagger identifies all entities that are mentioned in the text, such as people, locations, animals, organisations or institutions, social groups, etc. Out of all the identified entities in the text, the service highlights the most prominent ones and assigns a sentiment score to them.

What is a sentiment score?

Once the smartocto metadata tagger has identified the main entities from the provided article, it assigns a sentiment score to each one of them. A sentiment score ranges from -3 (very negative) to +3 (very positive) and reflects the context, overall tone and attitude towards the entity/topic expressed in the text. Both topics and/or entities can be tagged with a sentiment score.

How can the sentiment score enhance my strategic planning in the newsroom?

The sentiment scores can be a very valuable asset when evaluating the context in which a topic or entity is being presented. For example, whenever some entities/topics are meant to be approached from a neutral perspective, the sentiment score can help you address any potential deviations.

What do I need to do to see the tags in smartocto?

Once the service has been set up for you, you can start sending the articles. It’s up to you to incorporate a method of sending the articles from your CMS to the service when stories are published. Once processed, the tags will appear in smartocto Insights and Real Time tools.

What else do I need to know?

It is important to note that once a smartocto metadata tagger is turned on, it can only be used for newly published articles, starting from the moment that the service is turned on. Archive tagging is a separate project that needs to be agreed upon with smartocto Sales or your Customer Success representative.
